Shaved Bald: Hair Memorial II

PictureShaved Bald: Hair Memorial II paper, pleather, straight pins, brass tacks, glass. March 2014.
Since 2008, I have been losing my hair to  androgenetic alopecia, so I began preparing myself to deal with the cultural discrimination against bald women and the impact this diagnosis would have on my life. The 1944 photographs used for this piece document the punishment meted out to French women who were accused as conspirators for having sex with German men during the Occupation. This proves the over-determined value that is placed on a woman's hair (at least the hair on her head, otherwise hairless is just fine): the band CRASS's song, "Shaved Women," screams against the bald woman as a pariah.

Shaved women are they traitors?
Dead bodies all around

Shaved women instigators
Shaved women are they traitors?
Screaming babies
Screaming babies
Shaved women shooting dope
Shaved women disco dancing
Screaming babies
Screaming babies
Shaved women collaborators
Shaved women are they traitors?
Shaved women all around
Screaming babies
Screaming babies
Screaming babies
Shaved women instigators
Shaved women are they traitors?
Screaming babies
Screaming babies
Shaved women shooting dope
Shaved women disco dancing
Screaming babies

In all our decadence people die
In all our decadence people die
In all our decadence people die
In all our decadence people die, etc.

This is a work in progress.
