JANET SILK
Artist Educator ◆ Writing Instructor
I am an artist and arts educator with over nineteen years of teaching courses in art writing and contemporary art theory, criticism, history, and practice. As a writing instructor, my breadth and scope of expertise includes professional, academic, and creative writing.
• Specializing in writing for the visual arts. • Proficient with all aspects of exhibition process from concept development, planning, promotion, installation, launch, event, and strike. • Accomplished project manager and researcher in archive and library settings. • Ability to organize, catalog, inventory, display, conserve, preserve, and celebrate art in a variety of forms. |
I have written and published essays about my own work and teaching experience, as well as about diverse topics such as Black Metal music, Czech poetry, fashion shows, and Art/Life boundaries. My publishing record includes peer-reviewed and cultural research journals such as Public Culture and Helvete: A Journal of Black Metal Theory. I served as a peer reviewer for the Oxford University Press and forThe International Journal of Art and Design Education.
My art practice is a restless, feral cat who evades domestication—I endlessly chase her twitching tail: I have explored a variety of forms and genres. My wheelhouse is ephemeral materials, process art, and performance art experimentation. From 2014—2021, I was the founder, Artistic Director, and Choreographer of Si-si Dance & Performance Art Project (Si-si D), where I worked solo and collaboratively on a variety of cross-disciplinary projects which were presented at art galleries, alternative venues, and in public spaces. An avid mark-maker and journaler, I love drawing, cartooning, handwriting, calligraphy, and artists' books. Currently, my focus is on automatic drawing, asemic writing, visual poetry, and English and Arabic lettering and handwriting.
