Sept. 11, 2019 As part of SOMarts Cultural Center's 4Waves: 40 Performances for the Hole, Janet Silk performs as Munny Bunny, one of the characters developed by Si-si D for an action, performance, and music composition sequence entitled "Tales from Hunter's Point Shipyard,” which was created in collaboration with the electronic duo Klooj.
June 15, 2019 Electronic duo Klooj and Si-si D present another episode in their allegorical composition series, Action in the Stacks—collisions of sound, action, spoken word, and location... in places with books. The composition explores the tension between storytelling and improvisation through choreographed performance and sonic events that vary depending on location. Drawing Out the Muse: Cecilia is Wondering is inspired by the mysterious, open-ended pursuit of creative knowledge as manifested by the Prelinger Library.
April 8, 2019, electronic duo Klooj, and Si-si D, present an excerpt from their allegorical, three-part composition, Action in the Stacks, at Radhaus’s “Bier on Books” event. All book sales support the Friends of the Public Library.
On July 29, 2018, Si-si D, in collaboration with the electronic music duo Klooj, perform at Russian Hill Bookstore their three-part meta-composition Action in the Stacks, a fusion of invocations, sonic illustrations, and curious collisions of sound, action art, spoken word, and space…amongst the books. Tales from Hunter's Point Shipyard (one of three sets from Action in the Stacks) is performed on July 18, 2018 at the Peacock Lounge.
On December 15, 2017, for Pro Arts’ Holiday Arts Sale Kick Off Party, Si-si D presents birdbrain shuffle, a three-part ecdysial window (un)dressing event. This choreographed and improvised dance is inspired by the surrealist sensibilities of Leonora Carrington, the moods and tropes of the De Wallen district in Amsterdam, and the courtship displays of insects and birds.
Inspired by Roy Ascott’s essay, Is There Love in the Telematic Embrace?, artist Janet Silk creates a series of drawings from which she develops a performance art piece for Valentine's Day, 2015 in Polo Fields in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco as Si-si Dance & Performance Art Project (Si-si D). Si-Si D launches three more telematic performances in 2016 and one on April 26, 2017 for Pro Arts' exhibition "The New Situationists."
Ease on Down the Runway, is published in the Academy of Art University Fashion Show Book Spring 2014, available at Amazon. This creative nonfiction essay reports Silk's observations while attending the AAU's cutting-edge fashion graduate show in Bayview-Hunters Point in San Francisco.
Open a Vein: Suicidal Black Metal and Enlightenment is written for the inaugural Winter 2013 Incipit issue of Helvete: A Journal of Black Metal Theory. Janet discusses a locus of self-destruction within the Black Metal music genre and identifies specific ideologies and actions that are the terrain of Suicidal Black Metal.
In 2011, From Life-Art to Hijab, is featured in Stretcher: Visual Culture in the Bay Area and Beyond and The International Journal of Art and Design Education publishes The Pedagogy of Failure in the Global Art Market, which is about the challenges of teaching art at the American University in Cairo, Egypt.
Silk is recognized for her telephonic collaborative artwork. Local 411 was awarded the National Endowment for the Arts/Andy Warhol Foundation Regional Initiative Artists Project Grant. Local 411 and other telephone-based works are discussed in the books Snap To Grid: A User’s Guide to Digital Arts, Media, and Cultures; Women, Art and Technology; and Information Arts: Intersections of Art, Science and Technology. She has co-authored articles about her collaborative artwork for Afterimage: The Journal of Media Arts and Cultural Criticism, Public Culture: An interdisciplinary journal of transnational cultural studies, and Leonardo: Journal of the International Society for the Arts, Sciences, and Technology.
