Janet Silk is a writer and artist. Her research interests focus on critical theory, black metal theory, metal music studies, performance art theory and practices, and college art education. She has published essays in peer-reviewed, art and culture journals such as Public Culture, Leonardo: Journal of the International Society for the Arts, Sciences and Technology, Afterimage: The Journal of Media Arts and Cultural Criticism, The International Journal of Art and Design Education, and Helvete: A Journal of Black Metal Theory.
Silk has professional experience in installation art, sound art, creative writing, and performance art. Her exhibition and show record includes venues in and around the San Francisco Bay Area in California such as SOMarts Cultural Center, Mission Cultural Center, The Lab, New Langton Arts, Intersection for the Arts, ATA Gallery, Anti-Matter Gallery, Fort Mason Center, the Prelinger Library, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Works/San José, MACLA, San José, and Pro Arts, Oakland.
She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art from California Institute of the Arts and a Master of Fine Arts in Art Practice from the University of California, Berkeley and is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Art and Art History at San José State University, California.
