Janet Silk is a multidisciplinary artist, art educator, and writer who is based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Her work explores the boundaries between art, life, and spirituality. 

​Artistic Practice and Core Themes

• Performance and Multidisciplinary Art: From 2014 to 2021, Silk was the founder, Artistic Director, and Choreographer of the Si-si Dance & Performance Art Project (Si-si D). Through this project, she choreographed and presented ephemeral solo and collaborative works in galleries and public spaces. 
• Spirituality and Language: Her work incorporates cultural and spiritual traditions. Her connection to classical Arabic stems from studying the art of Qur'anic recitation, and her drawing series Nazars (2022) reflects these visual and textual influences.
• Naturalia: Her drawing and painting practice is inspired by nature, natural history. and geology, especially fossils, bones, shells, and rocks. 

Scholarship and Writing
Silk is an active academic writer specializing in the intersection of contemporary art theory and music culture. She has contributed to peer-reviewed academic journals, including The International Journal of Art and Design Education and Helvete: A Journal of Black Metal Theory. She is a member of the International Society for Metal Music Studies and her research explores the visual art, philosophy, culture and aesthetics of heavy metal music, with a preference for black, death, doom, and drone metal.
